Abstract

Sinop Museum Glass Oil Lamps from Early Byzantium
In the study 28 glass oil lamps in the collection of the Museum of Sinop are investigated. The artefacts recorded as surface finds in the collection were found by fishermen in the Black Seae in an amphora. The reason why these artefacts are chosen for the current study is because, even though they are existent in the collections of several museums, they are mostly recorded wrongly as glass, pot, cylindrical vessels in the collections. This results mainly from the fact that glass discoveries from the Byzantium Period are mostly not found intact, and that interpretations as to their functions are insufficient. As a result, in several studies the artefacts with the same form and function are named differently. This study aims to contibute to correct definition of glass artefacts of this type. The study lacks archeometric analysis of the artefacts, instead methodologically it follows a typological comparison and detects the period of the artefacts using similar samples.
