Problems in Citizenship Education in Secondary Schools in the Perspective of Social Studies Teachers
Citizenship education, which is shaped by the education policies, aims to provide individuals with the desired attitudes and behaviors and to become an active citizen. The main aim of this research to identified the problems during the lesson related to citizenship education which social studies teachers who work in the second step of primary education in Diyarbakır have and make suggestions about these problems. Research has been shaped by case study which is one of qualitative research methods. The study group of research consist of 97 social studies teachers working in the second step of primary education in the province of Diyarbakır in the 2016-2017 school year. The semi-structured interview form, consisting of 5 open-ended questions, was used to determine the opinions of the Social Studies teachers on the citizenship education. Content analysis was performed to analyze the data obtained from the teachers. As a result of the findings, it was concluded that the achievements related to citizenship education given in the course due to the differences in social perception (taxation, electricity and water consumption, smuggling) were not adopted by the students, and the regional problems and community insecurity affected the citizenship education negatively.
