Abstract

The Ergani Mining Plant During Atatürk’s Era
Copper is one of the important metals that people have used for various purposes since ancient times and that is among the essential inputs of industry today. Turkey is among the lucky countries in the world in terms of its rich mineral deposits. Over 50 kinds of minerals are produced in the world and Turkey is among the top 10 mineral-producing countries with the 29 minerals it produces. Archaeological research shows that mining in Anatolia dates back to 7000 B.C. and that it played an important role in the development of the civilizations established there. In Anatolia, one of the first settled territories of the world, high civilizations based on metals were established. The Turks, who had profound knowledge about metals when they first arrived in Anatolia, made significant contributions to the development of Anatolian mining. With the proclamation of the Turkish Republic in 1923, very important endeavors were initiated to organize the mining activities that constituted a significant part of the economic system. In this period, policies to develop the mining of the country were adopted and institutions, organizations and companies to serve in this sector were established. From the first years of the Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who placed special emphasis on mining, stated that measures to develop Turkish mining must be taken and that establishment and development of national industry strictly depended on mineral exploration and mining.
