A Qualitative Study on Implementation of Story Mapping Method Used with Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) Technique in Turkish Language Course

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of story mapping method used with cooperative integrated reading and composition (CIRC) technique in Turkish Language course on students, to make observations about the treatment, to explore the views of teacher and students participated in application. With this qualitative study action research design was used. The research consisted of 5th grade students enrolled at Behrampaşa Primary School in 2011 - 2012 academic year in Sivas city. The study included 36 students who used story mapping method together with CIRC technique in Turkish Language course. Interview and observation forms developed by the researchers were used to collect the data. The data were analyzed by using the NVIVO 10 program. Seven themes related to the implementation of story mapping method used with CIRC technique were identified. These themes included: how to implement the story mapping method used with CIRC, requirements for implementation, the emotional situation related the implementation, the problematic situations during the implementation, admirable aspects of the implementation, wish to reuse the implementation and the benefits/contributions of the implementation. The study results revealed that the students knew how to implement story mapping method used with CIRC technique and were aware of the necessary things for the implementation. It was determined that the students found the implementation useful in general and had positive ideas about the implementation. All the students wanted to use the story mapping method used with CIRC technique in other courses as well.
