Abstract

Abstract

National festivals or celebrations and activities to commemorate national days have been one of the events or occasions to express national feelings and thoughts since the construction of the nation states that has started after the emergence of nationalism. The concept of ‘national festival’ emerged after the declaration of the constitutionalism second time, which was indeed very late in the period of the Ottoman State. Then the declaration of the second constitutionalism was started to be celebrated from July the 10th (actually it is July the 23rd) as a national festival. The concepts of national days and national festivals gained their real meanings and use in the first years of the republican era, but there was not any celebration of the Malazgirt Victory at those years. When August 26 came to mind, only and only the Commander-in-Chief Battle, the Great Offensive identified with Atatürk and the Republic. Celebrations of this victory were held at the local and national level, and were given in the newspapers of the period with the headlines. It is seen that events related to the Malazgirt Victory were not included in the newspapers of the period. As a result, this paper examines the issues of Muş Altınova Newspaper started to be published in 1953 to find out how celebrations and commemorations of the Malazgirt Victory in the province of Muş was represented in local press at the times of the Democrat Party Government and 1960 military coup.
