Analysis of Merzifon Urban Site Area and the Effects of the New Function on the Building and Its Environment

Abstract

Since Merzifon is located on an important axis that connects Samsun to Central Anatolia and the west, trade has been in demand and trade has developed with the settlement in the region. The Pasha Mosque, built by Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha, which was an important personality during the Ottoman period, revived the Kara Mustafa Pasha Complex Merzifon center with the building elements of Tuzpazarı Hamam, Bedesten and Taşhan, and trade developed further in and around these building elements. Taşhan, which is one of the important elements of the traditional trade texture in the urban protected area, has been re-functioned with the hotel function, which is the modern version of its original function. The purpose of the article is to reveal the effects of Taşhan's new function in the structure and its surroundings. In this regard, firstly, the monumental buildings, residences and qualified shops in the urban site in which Taşhan is located are categorized according to their functions, and a holistic view is provided. Afterward, the re-functioning of Taşhan was evaluated through the restoration plan and the building photos before and after the application. As a result, the environmental effects of Taşhan's new function were revealed.
