A Semiotic Analysis on The Gendered Representation of Meat

According to postmodernism's understanding of identity, men and women who are born with biological differences shape their identities through social learning in line with what they are taught. "Being a woman" means fulfilling sexist roles assigned to women by patriarchal society, such as beauty, elegance, motherhood, femininity, being a good helper to her man. For women, not only these, but the entire social life is determined by the male-dominated world, right down to which gender is allowed to consume which foods. This determination is almost always the same everywhere, from fashion to advertisements with their definitions of beauty. According to feminist theory, this is because the structure of the system is determined by the male-dominated society. In this article, the gendered food consumption of the male-dominated society is analyzed through meat and vegetables. The study hypothesizes that meat consumption is associated with a male-dominated society and that in addition to the link between men and meat, there is also a close relationship between women and vegetarianism. Therefore, Nusret's video titled "Real Life Ninja", in which the tight and inseparable bond established between meat and male identity has existed in society in a patriarchal way for centuries and society has been designed with a patriarchal structure, has been analyzed using the theory of Feminist thinker Carol J. Adams' "Sexual Politics of Meat" and analyzed by semiotic method. According to the results of semiotic analysis, men's relationship with meat is not only limited to the need for protein but also based on the reconstruction of the patriarchal structure. This patriarchal structure based on meat also characterizes vegetables and the structures associated with them as second class and in its service.

In early childhood education, unlike other age groups, conventional measurement and evaluation methods are not functional and more observation-based assessment methods are needed, which are suitable for the developmental characteristics of the age. It is of great importance to know what these methods are and what kind of studies have been done on these methods. This study, which aims to examine the variables, methods and findings on which scientific studies conducted in Turkey focus on, is a qualitative research. The data source of the research consisted of studies accessed from the Higher Education Council National Thesis Center, Google Scholar and Educational Resource Information Center databases. It was accepted as a criterion that the studies obtained were carried out within the scope of evaluation in early childhood education in Turkey and that they were recorded in the databases that were scanned with the selected keywords. The studies reached were scanned in terms of certain variables suh as the research design, purpose, participants, data collection and findings in order to reveal the current situation and general trend through document analysis. Looking at the findings, it can be concluded that, the studies mostly used data based on teacher opinions, and only quantitative or qualitative methods were preferred rather than mixed method. The scarcity of alternative assessment studies, studies conducted with children, and scale development studies are other noticeable results at first glance. In addition, the increase in the number of research articles in recent years indicates the importance of the topic and the efforts to establish the scientific basis and find solutions to the identified deficiencies. It is crucial for experts in the field, academics, and decision-makers to support this relatively new field with studies that contribute both quantitatively and qualitatively.

The term “mevâcib”, meaning salaries, is used for the salaries of those who held administrative positions in the Ottoman Empire. Separate books are kept for the mevâcib; these books were called “esami book” or “mevâcib book” because the names that did not pay salaries were written. Essentially, the logic of the notebooks classified as janissary, ulufe, esami, castle or mevâcib registers in the archives is the same, and these registers are wage registers. In these books, the names of the officials and the records of the wages can be followed. The costs of working in the organizations affiliated to the foundations can be followed from these books. In the Ottoman Empire, religious and social structures in the cities were built through waqfs. The expenditures of the soup kitchens and mosques and the expenses of the personnel were also financed by the waqfs. In our study the records in the book numbered TSMA.D., nr. 1532 include the names and monthly salaries of the mosque and public servant foundation staff in Bursa on H. 905/ M.1499. This notebook, which starts with the phrase Defter-i Esâmi, contains the duties of religious officials such as imam, muezzin, hafiz and salawat worker, and other officials such as repairmen, cooks, bakers, cleaners and porters in a mosque and soup kitchen in Bursa. In our study, the salaries of civil servants were discussed by considering the contents of the 1532 registered esami book. First of all, a list of the personnel working in mosques and soup kitchens, their components, titles, daily and monthly allowances, and the burdens, names and salaries of the officials in each class were made. Accordingly, 25.860 coins were paid monthly to all personnel working in mosques and soup kitchens. In addition, the salaries of mosque officials who set out from the caravanserai revenues and the treasury in Bursa were listed. 186 akches per day, 5.580 akces per month and 66.960 akces per year were paid to 90 soldiers who were assigned to read the Quran in the morning, noon and afternoon hours. It is understood that 22 people who read En'am were paid 88 akce a day, 2.640 akçe per month and 31.680 akçe per year, their salaries from the treasury.

The Use of TRT as a Propaganda Tool by the Governments in Turkey

In Turkey, the place of broadcasting in society and its relationship with politics have been debated since the beginning of radio broadcasting in 1927. These criticisms and debates also had an impact on the establishment process of TRT. While the TRT law was being prepared, an 'autonomous' and 'impartial' broadcasting away from the influence of politics was targeted. Accordingly, the body defined in the law was inspired by the model of the BBC, a worldwide broadcasting organisation that operates with the financial and moral support of the British Crown. This study analyses TRT's relations with the governments since its establishment in 1964 until today (2023) and evaluates how the governments have used TRT for their own purposes and propaganda, especially in historical TV series. Our research reveals that the 'autonomy' status of TRT, which was established with an 'autonomous' status, should be reconsidered in order to prevent this feature from being used for the same purpose by future governments.

The muhallefat records, which are documents showing the assets left behind by the deceased, contain very important information about the socio-economic life of the period. In this sense, they are valuable records for historical research. The era of Abdülmecid, which was a depressed period of the Ottoman finances, was a period in which palaces, mansions were built, and the western lifestyle was exaggerated, even with debt, despite all the economic difficulties. As the subject of the article, in such a period when extravagance was exaggerated, we found it appropriate to evaluate the opposition of a woman from the palace, Servetseza, who was a member of the Cherkassky Dynasty, one of the famous Caucasian nobles who had served as the head of Abdulmecid until the end of her life. As the subject of the article, in such a period when extravagance was exaggerated, we found it appropriate to evaluate the muhallefat of a woman from the palace, Servetseza, a member of the Cherkassky Dynasty, one of the famous Caucasian nobles who had served as the head lady of Abdülmecid until the end of her life. Because the debts left behind by the deceased are much more than the value of her assets. The archival documents, which are the main source of the research, were reached as a result of the scanning made in the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey State Archives. A total of 133 files were found in the search conducted on the Servetseza woman. From these documents, 26 different files, which we identified after her death, that is, related to her muhallefat, were analyzed and transcribed. We hope that the study will contribute to the studies on the socio-economic life of the Ottoman dynasty.

A social media system that is designed to be directly relied upon a leader allows him/her to establish a world and a network which are isolated from the outside world. While the leader only communicates/interacts with her supporters in her own communication ecosystem, she can become unique in her eyes. Problems and solutions are made sense and shaped in this ecosystem. Meanings and sentiments represent the character of the leader who becomes the absolute within the system, and the leader and her supporters become one. Breaking away from reality, therefore, an environment prone to leader cult and fanaticism, where the other is seen as inferior or hated, can emerge. This study, accordingly, will answer the following question through an analysis of US Capitol Attack that occurred on 6th January 2021: How the leaders communicate with their supporters during an act of violence? The attack, made by the masses of the President himself in the United States, is of paramount importance and suitable for an effective observation of the relationship between leader-social media-mass and violence. The paper will analyse Donald Trump’s tweets between 03.00-08.01 via the R program. His tweets on the last day, when the events faded away and Twitter closed his account completely, will be subjected to sentiment analysis. The paper will conclude that Trump focused on overwhelming the election, interpreting the events and the persons with negative and harsh adjectives and adverbs. Furthermore, the paper will also conclude that Trump used this kind of language to keep his supporters mobilised, collaborating with mass platforms and using the same language in the process of communication with his own supporters. The findings will show that Trump is an enthusiastic but, at the same time, a hot-headed leader who conveys positive messages to his supporters.

Attitudes of Tunisian Students to Learn Turkish as a Foreign Language

The objective of the present research is to discern the attitudes of Tunisian students towards the acquisition of Turkish as a second language, utilizing the relational survey model, a widely recognized quantitative methodology. Data for this investigation were amassed via the Turkish Learning Attitude Scale, a tool developed by Karatay and Kartallıoğlu. The acquired findings were statistically analyzed using the SPSS 16.00 software package, with results being visually depicted in tabular format and subsequently interpreted. From the corpus of data derived from 212 participants, several determinations have been made. Tunisian students exhibited an overall high positive attitude towards learning Turkish as a second language. Further, it was observed that the number of foreign languages known by the students and their levels of proficiency in Turkish did not exert a significant influence on their attitudes towards learning the language. Moreover, the duration of Turkish language study did not create a significant disparity in their attitudes. Interestingly, the participants' motives for learning Turkish were found to significantly influence their attitudes. Participants learning Turkish for academic purposes demonstrated more positive attitudes when compared to those studying Turkish to comprehend Turkish language and culture, professional advancement, tourism, or to indulge in Turkish culture. This implies that a well-defined future objective and a robust motivation are instrumental in shaping the participants' attitudes towards learning Turkish.

The aim of our study is to examine the leisure time satisfaction levels of individuals participating in recreational activities in open areas in the city center of Corum with different variables. A questionnaire consisting of demographic information and Leisure Time Satisfaction Scale were applied to 556 individuals who were randomly selected from the people of Corum and accepted to participate in the study voluntarily. Descriptive statistics of the data were presented as mean standard deviation for normally distributed data in continuous variables, and descriptive statistics of categorical data were presented as numbers and percentages. In the study, Student's T test was used to compare the scale scores of two groups, and one-way ANOVA analysis was used to compare more than two groups. Statistical significance level was accepted as p<0.05. It was determined that 308 of the participants were male, 248 were female, 67% were between the ages of 18-25, 423 were single, 377 had associate degree and postgraduate education and predominantly belonged to the middle income group. Leisure time satisfaction level (LTSL) and mean of sub-dimensions were significantly different according to age, education, marital and income status (p<0.05). No significant difference was found between LTSL according to genders. It can be said that the restriction period of close to one year and the negative effects of COVID-19 have changed many habits and their effects on outdoor leisure activities continue. Therefore, it may be recommended to revise and reschedule leisure time activities in order to overcome the negative effects on physical and mental health and increase the level of satisfaction during the post-pandemic normalization period.

The aim of this study is to determine the opinions of Turkish teachers about drama techniques and to reveal at what level they know and can use these techniques. The mixed method, which combines qualitative and quantitative research methods, was used in the research. Sample consists of 166 Turkish teachers working in secondary schools in Adana's Çukurova, Seyhan and Yüreğir districts in the 2017-2018 academic year. The data collection tool in the study is the questionnaire (survey) form developed by the researchers. Percentage and frequency were used while evaluating quantitative data, and content analysis was used for qualitative data. In the research, it was determined that the teachers knew the techniques of "narrative, improvisation, pantomime, visualization" at a good level and that they do not know enough about techniques such as "hot chair, procedural drama and dull images". It was determined that the majority of the participants preferred drama techniques other than "narrative technique" less or did not use them at all. In the study, it was revealed that both teachers and students do not have much knowledge about drama techniques. At the same time, among the reasons why these techniques are not used, the fact that the classrooms are very crowded and the places for drama are insufficient come to the fore. As a result of the answers given by the participants to the open-ended questions about why they use drama techniques, it was stated that these techniques instill self-confidence in the students, give them the ability to express themselves, develop the imagination and creativity of the students and contribute to the easier understanding of the lesson. Within the framework of teachers' opinions, results such as giving practical trainings for the prevalence and recognition of drama techniques, increasing the course hours of Turkish lessons, putting drama as an independent course, and improving the physical conditions in schools were achieved.

Edward Granville Browne continued his school life, which he started at Eton College in England, by studying medicine in Cambridge. While he was a medical student, he was sent to Istanbul by his father and was interested in the news of the 93 War between the Ottoman Empire and Russia. After that, he started to learn Persian, Turkish and Arabic while reading books on the Middle East and the Ottoman Empire. After meeting Iranian intellectual Haji Pirzadeh Naini in England, he used the title Mazhar Ali and was sent to Tehran for a year by the British Foreign Office. After coming to Iran, he contacted the constitutionalist Baha'i leaders. In our study, we tried to find out the reason why Browne went to Iran despite being a doctor, and the reason for his contact with the constitutionalists at a time when this country was experiencing a constitutional process and was dragged into internal turmoil. His contact with Baha'is after he went to Iran, his involvement in the border issues on the Ottoman-Iranian border and the sectarian conflicts in Iran also constitute the main target of our study. The travelogue in which he collected his notes about his trip to Iran is our most important resource. Although he is not a linguist and has not contacted people related to this field in Iran, we tried to find answers to questions about his writing on the History of Iranian Literature. Due to his interest in Persian, we tried to find out the reason for his contact with Baha'is and Zoroastrians in Tehran, Kirman, Yazd, Zanjan and Isfahan rather than contacting people related to this field in Iran.
