The Entente States invited both the Government of Turkish Grand National Assembly and the Istanbul Government to the Lausanne Peace Conference. When the Istanbul Government wanted to attend the conference, the Government of Turkish Grand National Assembly did not accept it and on November 1, 1922, it decided to remove the sultanate from the caliphate. After the removal of the sultanate by the Turkish Grand National Assembly, Sultan Mehmet Vahidettin said he would not accept the caliphate without sultanate. On November 17, 1922, he left Istanbul with the British Malaya Armor, thinking that his freedom and life were at stake along with some events that developed during that period. So the caliphate was empty. Upon the emancipation of the caliphate, the Government of the Turkish Grand National Assembly took a guarantee from Abdülmecit Efendi on some issues and assigned him as the Caliph on November 18, 1922. Although there were some debates on the assignment of the caliph in the Turkish Grand National Assembly, negotiations were held on this issue and reconciliation was provided. Abdulmecit Efendi’s assignment as the caliph was notified to him by Refet Pasha, a representative of the Turkish Grand National Assembly in Istanbul. After Abdulmecit Efendi was assigned as the caliph, an allegiance ceremony was held in Istanbul on Friday, November 24, 1922 and the caliphate regiment was organized. A delegation of nineteen people was elected to attend to the allegiance ceremony by the Turkish Grand National Assembly. During the ceremony, Abdulmecit Efendi was delivered the certificate of assignment by the Turkish Grand National Assembly.},author={Hüseyin KALEMLİ},year={2018},journal={Journal of History School}}
