Abstract

The phenomenon of globalization that is happening in the world today affects the social structure. This change is reflected in our cities, living spaces and architecture. The use of buildings that have lost their current function as a hotel is a common occurrence today. In historical cities, the necessity of increasing the bed capacity in the existing urban structure, especially urban centers, the difficulties of finding empty land has caused the existing buildings to be used as hotels. Ensuring the sustainability of the building is achieved through the protection of the identity. The most effective way of conservation is to ensure that the structures participate in everyday life. The main problem is that protection is the most contradictory element of tourism in the reuse process. This problem; can lead to negative consequences on architecture and urban identity. Preservation of identity in tourism building that they are reuse building is important for the structures to be a product of time, to give information about the experience of the time, transformation, to ensure the historical continuity and to be passed on to future generations. The concept of identity in tourism building in reuse building may be damaged by the interventions, mass attachments, space arrangements and materials. The residential buildings, which have reached the milestone, have been re-used for protection and tourism purposes and they have participated in life. In this context, the hotels which they are reuse building are examined in İstanbul and these buildings have been limited to the existing historic residential buildings. The Wyndham Istanbul Old City Hotel, the Ajia Hotel and Lush Hip hotels are examined; and their site plan decisions, plan schema, structural system, façade are examined. To achieve this purpose; the concept of identity has been researched, the importance of the concept of identity in architecture has been emphasized, evaluation criteria have been established in the protection of identity concept. In this direction, it has been tried to determine the extent to which the changes are in harmony with the original building and the continuity of the identity occurrences within the scope of the reuse buildings. How their identity change, change or not change; is determined by the assessment criteria in the plan, the structural system, the facade. Selected examples of tourism buildings; they are determined which identity traces are protected or which identity traces are deleted.
