Abstract

Ali Faik (Üstünidman) Bey completed his primary, secondary and high school education in Mekteb-i Sultani. After graduation, he started to work in the same school as the first Turkish physical education teacher. He taught gymnastics and also played an active role in the development of weightlifting in our country. Later on, he opened a private gymnasium to provide non-students with the opportunity to participate in sports activities as well. Some of his students from the school or gymnasium are Alibrandi Brothers, who won the championship in the Olympic Games in Greece; Kara Ahmet, who was a world champion wrestler; and Ali Sami Yen and Selim Sırrı Tarcan, who are prominent figures of the Turkish sports history.Another contribution of Ali Faik (Üstünidman) Bey to the Turkish sports is that in 1890 he wrote the first book on sports entitled Jimnastik yahut Riyazat-ı Bedeniyye in our country. He was the Istanbul reporter of some French and Swiss sports newspapers and journals. He also wrote articles about gymnastics to Idman magazine, which was one of the first sports magazines of that period He was, therefore, one of the first pioneers of our printed sports media.
