Abstract

Abstract

Positivism is one of the major intellectual traditions that has played an important role in the development of modern science and associates scientific knowledge with observation, experience, and empirical facts. The aim of this study is to examine the epistemological and methodological conceptual structure of positivism, particularly within the framework of Auguste Comte’s thought, and to reveal how this structure has been reflected in research approaches in the social sciences. The main problem of the study concerns the principles through which positivism’s assumptions about knowledge are transformed into scientific research methods. In this regard, the study was conducted as a conceptual analysis based on a review of the relevant literature. The intellectual background in which positivism emerged, Comte’s Law of Three Stages and his conception of science, the fundamental concepts of positivist epistemology, the quantitative research approach in the social sciences, and the main criticisms directed at positivism were examined together. The findings indicate that positivist epistemology centers on the concepts of fact, experience, observability, and objectivity, while these assumptions are reflected at the methodological level through observation, measurement, causality, generalization, and an objective understanding of scientific method. It was also found that positivism transferred the model of science developed in the natural sciences to the social sciences and constituted one of the philosophical foundations of the quantitative research tradition. However, the tendency to approach human beings and society solely through their observable and measurable dimensions, while excluding values and historical-cultural context from scientific explanation, has been among the major criticisms directed at positivism. In conclusion, positivism established a direct relationship between the conception of knowledge and research methodology and has had a lasting influence on methodological debates in the social sciences.
