The purpose of this research is to examine the policies and practices of cultural colonialism carried out through education in the Sanjak of Alexandretta, which remained under the French mandate between 1920 and 1938. Document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods, was employed in the study. The research reveals that traditional French cultural colonial strategies implemented through language, religion, and education were systematically applied in the region. The French aimed to achieve their colonial objectives through educational policies, schools, teachers, curricula, courses, exams, and textbooks. While the French Mandate administration supported and encouraged the maintenance of a fragmented social and cultural structure in the region, it simultaneously exhibited an approach toward the dissemination of French language and culture. In schools, French history was taught instead of Turkish history, and French was established as a compulsory language. The teaching staff was composed of soldiers and officials from French colonies, as well as groups opposing Türkiye. In this way, a process of alienating the local society from its own values and national identity was initiated through education, culture, and language. It can be stated that the society was subjected to cultural assimilation through the implemented educational policies. In order to eliminate the lasting effects of this assimilation, an academic and social awakening is required. In this context, it is of great importance to create a conscious awareness of the mechanisms of cultural colonialism at every level, from educational administrators to students, and indeed, across the entire society.
