Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to examine whether sibling jealousy scores among sixth-grade middle school students differed according to their mothers’ child-rearing attitudes and selected demographic characteristics. The study employed a comparative relational survey design and involved 370 students and their mothers. Data were collected using the Mother and Child Information Form, Form C of the Parental Child-Rearing Attitudes Scale, and the Short Form of the Marmara Sibling Jealousy Scale. Independent-samples t tests, one-way analysis of variance, and Tukey’s post hoc test were used to analyze the data. Students whose mothers had low levels of democratic attitudes had significantly higher mean sibling jealousy scores than those whose mothers had moderate or high levels (p= 0.017; η²= 0.022). Students whose mothers had moderate levels of authoritarian attitudes had higher mean scores than those whose mothers had low levels (p= 0.046; η²= 0.017). Students from families with four or more children had higher mean scores than those from families with two or three children (p= 0.011; η²= 0.024). The effect sizes for the three statistically significant comparisons were small. No significant differences were found according to overly permissive attitudes, student gender, maternal education level, or maternal age. In conclusion, sibling jealousy scores were higher among students whose mothers had low levels of democratic attitudes or moderate levels of authoritarian attitudes, and among those from families with four or more children, compared with the respective comparison groups.
