This study aims to evaluate the potential contribution of ancient settlements in Kars Province and its surrounding areas, identified through archaeological surface surveys, to cultural tourism. The region possesses a rich cultural heritage extending from the prehistoric period to the present, evidenced by archaeological remains associated with the Karaz Culture, Urartian settlements, and the Late Iron Age. The research analyzes the spatial distribution, preservation status, and interaction with current transportation infrastructure of castles, mounds, and open settlement sites identified during surface surveys. Methodologically, the study employs a comparative analytical approach based on literature review, field observations, and assessment of archaeological data. To assess the potential for integration into cultural tourism, criteria such as site accessibility, physical preservation, landscape visibility, touristic attractiveness, and suitability for visitor use were applied. The evaluations indicate that a substantial portion of the ancient settlements in Kars and its environs possess significant potential for cultural tourism. However, deficiencies in site preservation, insufficient promotion, and limited tourism infrastructure hinder the full utilization of this potential. Notably, castles and mound settlements with high landscape value and easy access via transportation networks are particularly suitable for inclusion in cultural tourism routes. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that the ancient settlements of Kars are of strategic importance not only for archaeological research but also for cultural tourism development. It emphasizes the necessity of implementing sustainable conservation measures and incorporating local community participation into cultural tourism strategies.
