Abstract

Abstract

Literary texts are categorized into various genres, one of which is the uncanny genre, which unsettles the individual, evokes anxiety and fear, and creates a sense of insecurity and ominousness. Uncanny texts create a disturbing effect on the reader through elements such as dead bodies, the reanimation of the dead, entrapment and inescapability, darkness and silence, ominous entities, the evil eye and superstitions, ambiguity of people or settings, and transitions from a safe environment to an unsafe one. Within the scope of this study, the novel Pan's Labyrinth: The Labyrinth of the Faun, co-written by Guillermo del Toro and Cornelia Funke, was selected through criterion sampling for its richness in uncanny elements and its representation of dark fantasy in children's and young adult literature, and was analyzed in terms of uncanny codes. The study employs theory-driven deductive content analysis based on the uncanny genre analysis model recently proposed by Kutlu and Dumanlı Kadızade (2025). Within this model, the uncanny codes related to people include the recurrence phenomenon, duality and twinning, the castration complex, ambiguity in people, omnipotence derived from thought, the distinction between the animate and inanimate, belief in death, and the dream phenomenon. The codes that render a setting unsettling include silence, darkness and desolation, disgust and the smell of mold, entrapment and labyrinths, spatial ambiguity, intellectual omnipotence in the space, the animate/inanimate distinction within the setting, belief in death, and the womb fantasy. Findings reveal that all uncanny codes related to people were identified except for the dream phenomenon, while all codes associated with the setting were identified. In total, 32 codings creating an uncanny effect were identified in the novel, and the findings are discussed in terms of text selection, reading instruction, literary genre awareness, and emotional education in Turkish language teaching.
