Abstract

Abstract

“Silk”, which gave its name to the world's largest trade route, has been used for centuries as a symbol of splendor in intercultural interaction. This study examines the meaning layers reflected in folk song texts through the types of fabric, clothing, and accessories in which the sign “silk” is used. The study's corpus consists of 8,084 folk songs in the REPERTÜKÜL database; through purposive sampling, 135 folk songs directly containing the sign “silk” were determined as the sample. The research was conducted in two stages: first, the types of silk fabric, clothing, and accessories in the folk songs, along with their accompanying colors, were classified; second, the data were analyzed within the framework of Roland Barthes's semiotics and myth theory, drawing on the signifier/signified and denotation/connotation relationships. The 135 folk songs examined were classified into seven categories according to their semantic function: beauty and elegance, value, socio-economic status, silk handkerchief and promise, attachment and reunion, confusion, and urbanity. The findings reveal that while the sign “silk” literally denotes a type of fabric, it connotatively produces cultural meaning layers such as beauty, elegance, economic power, social status, loyalty, promise-keeping, urbanity, and the desire for reunion.
