Aiming to investigate the urban and vegetation degradation in the Gaza Strip resulting from the Al-Aqsa Flood Operation launched on 7 October 2023, and the subsequent conflicts using remote sensing techniques, this study analyzes changes in urban and vegetated areas using multi-temporal Landsat satellite data spanning from 3 October 2023 to 6 October 2024. NDBI analysis was employed as the primary tool to identify structural change and destruction in urban areas, while NDVI analysis was used to determine changes and degradation in vegetation cover. Overlay analysis, applied to integrate these two datasets spatially, was conducted over a study area of 373.42 km² in order to reveal the simultaneous dimensions of destruction. The results indicate that 258.80 km², representing to 69.3 percent of urban areas across the Gaza Strip, have been damaged, and that 12.9 percent of the vegetation cover has been lost. A particularly severe pattern of destruction, characterized by the concurrent loss of built-up areas and green spaces, is observed in Gaza City, Deir al-Balah, Khan Yunis, and, to a relatively lesser extent, along the Rafah corridor. The analysis further reveals that approximately two-thirds of the urban fabric in the region lost its functionality within a single year. The current situation aligns with the concept of urbicide, which is used in the literature to define the systematic and destructive effects of warfare conducted in cities on urban space.
