Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the cinematic representation of gender-based violence through an analysis of the film Bergen (2022) directed by Mehmet Binay and Caner Alper. By comparing the artist’s real-life experiences with their cinematic portrayal, the research applies Roland Barthes’s semiotic analysis approach to explore how violence is constructed, symbolized, and communicated on screen. The central argument of the study is that violence constitutes not merely an individual experience but a multidimensional phenomenon continuously reproduced by social and cultural structures. Through the examination of colors, costumes, dialogues and stage atmospheres, the study reveals both explicit and implicit representations of violence. Descriptive analysis was utilized as a supporting technique for the systematic classification and interpretation of qualitative data obtained during the research process. The findings underscore that gender-based violence should not be regarded solely as a personal tragedy but rather as a structural issue sustained by unequal power relations and patriarchal oppression. In this respect, the study contributes both to semiotic approaches in film studies and to scholarly debates in gender studies. Furthermore, the study sheds light on the relationship between gender roles and patriarchal mechanisms of oppression by deciphering the denotative and connotative layers of visual and auditory signs in cinematic texts.
