Abstract

Abstract

This study identifies oxymoronic structures in seven selected works from the Old Anatolian Turkish period: Bahrü’l Hakâyık, Behçetü’l-Hadâyık, Dede Korkut, Garib-nâme, Kur’an Tercümesi, Kıssa-i Yusuf, and Süheyl ü Nev-bahâr. The study establishes a classification based on both the semantic and formal characteristics of these structures. The analysis reveals that oxymorons can be formed not only at the semantic level but also through Turkish and foreign-derived suffixes. However, it is noted that not every negative element constitutes an oxymoron; some suffixes and structures are exceptions to this usage. The fact that oxymoronic structures, particularly those formed with the negative question form of the present tense, such as "almaz mu sen?" and "körmez mü siz?", are constructed with different personal suffixes (second person singular and second person plural), provides a diverse range of oxymoronic usage in the works. Among the works examined in this study, a specific example of an oxymoron formed with the -mAz adjectival-verbal suffix such as ‘endless meal’ was found only in the Garib-nâme. This suggests that such constructions may vary depending on the text type and stylistic features.
