Abstract

Abstract

There is a strong bond between literature and history. Historical events are presented to the reader in literary works through distinct forms and styles. Events that shape the lives of nations leave profound impacts on every aspect of society. Throughout world history, the Turkish nation—characterized primarily by its martial spirit—has emerged stronger from nearly every war it has fought. However, the First World War, a major event in recent history, resulted in the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Subsequently, an epic struggle was waged to liberate the remaining homeland from enemy occupation. Because the entire populace participated in this effort, it came to be known as the "National Struggle." These events ingrained the image of "heroism" into the cultural DNA of the Turkish nation. Literary works born of these patriotic sentiments have succeeded in keeping this image alive to the present day. Mehmet Emin Yurdakul, known as the "National Poet," incorporated this struggle of the Turkish nation into his works and contributed to instilling national consciousness within society. This study, which examines Mehmet Emin Yurdakul’s poetry from a descriptive perspective, aims to elucidate the place and significance of his poems within the context of the National Struggle and to offer recommendations to interested parties. The study analyzes Mehmet Emin Yurdakul’s poems using qualitative document review and content analysis. Based on the subjects of the 142 poems examined, 67 codes and 36 themes were identified. The findings reveal a predominance of themes related to individual awareness and self-consciousness—specifically the code of "self-discovery" (appearing 32 times)- alongside codes such as "homeland," "death," "compassion," and "love for children."
